Jamaica Beach RV, Galveston

We have been enjoying our week here at Jamaica Beach RV just west of Galveston. Below is a view looking out over the Gulf of Mexico.

Below is the view looking toward the bay. Galveston Island is about 1 mile wide at this point. As you can see, it is a combination of vacation homes and grazing land.

Looking down at the pool and hot tub.

2011.10.11 Galveston sites

We did some sightseeing in Galveston today. This first picture is of the statue Victory commemorating the Battle of Jacinto where Texas won its independence from Mexico.

Below is one of the beautiful old houses of Galveston.

Next we went to end of the island along the ship channel to the port of Houston. As I noted in a previous post. The Port of Houston is the largest port in the US. Here are some views of a ship passing through the ship channel.

Above were looking through the shipping channel toward Galveston Bay. The ferry that crosses the shipping channel can be seen in the distance. Below are some of the birds keeping us company while we are watching the ships and the dolphins playing in the ship channel.

A tanker going through the pass. Below you can see the ferry shuttling vehicles across the shipping channel from Galveston to the Bolivar peninsula.

Above, a view of the seawall road. Below, is a view of our beach at the campground. In Texas, you can drive (at your own risk) on the beaches.

2011.10.10 Moved to Galveston

After yesterday, a day of pouring rain and thunderstorms and 5" of much needed rain, the sun came out this morning and humidity was gone. We took our time breaking camp because we knew we were only going 28 miles to the south side of Galveston. As we headed south to Texas City, more refineries were in view. After all, 25% of the oil refined in the US is refined in the Houston port area.

The drive across the causeway was beautiful with the sun glinting on the waves. I just love the seawall in Galveston! No guardrail just a beautiful ocean view!

I got my water walking in at our new campground - many thanks to my friend Marilyn in Pennsylvania getting me water walking this past summer! Here is a photo of the lovely pool and spa at our campground, Jamaica Beach RV.
